Tall Graduated Chest of Drawers in Walnut, C1850

19th century
Description

A tall, one piece graduated chest of drawers in solid walnut, with pine and walnut drawer linings. The pine drawer sides are dovetailed and mitred - a feature I have not seen before, but speaks to the quality of the piece which is incredibly heavy (and solid).

Above the middle top drawer there is an interior ‘secret shelf’. The whole is raised on stylish, swept bracket feet and this feature and the ‘one piece’ construction suggest an Irish (or possibly even American) heritage. Mid 19th century.

Restoration: Small repair to front of right hand bracket foot and the whole cleaned and polished

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tallboy is a tall, narrow chest of drawers designed to maximise vertical storage space while occupying a minimal floor footprint. Originally evolving in the 18th century, these pieces typically incorporate multiple tiers of graduated drawers, often topped with smaller side-by-side drawers.

Mid-19th century chests were predominantly crafted using solid walnut framing and figure-matched walnut veneers. Drawer linings were typically constructed from pine or oak, fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints and brass drop-handles or escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail construction inside the drawer boxes, uneven timber wear consistent with age, and original steel locks or brass keyhole escutcheons. Look for natural shrinkage lines along veneer panels and oxidation on the internal drawer linings.

A vertical tallboy provides structured height in a room, pairing well with neutral wall palettes, textured linen textiles, and understated modern artwork. Position the piece against a focal wall to anchor the space while serving as substantial functional storage.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct sources of heat or sunlight.
