Rare William & Mary Walnut and Yew Wood Chest of Drawers

Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

A rare 17th century walnut and yew wood chest of drawers, of particularly good rich colour and patina.

William & Mary c1690.

This splendid example has a finely figured oak top with moulded edge, over four oak lined drawers, with the original iron locks present. The drawers opening on side-runners, which were widely used in drawer construction in the 17th century. Beautifully decorated drawer fronts, having rare beautifully figured and burr yew wood, with walnut cross-banding.

With the very attractive original applied oak beading to the drawer dividers. The original baroque design brass escutcheons are still present. The brass pear drop handles appear to be replacements, but are stylistically correct. The sides of the chest are panelled oak, of peg construction.

Having developed a wonderful rich colour and patina over the many centuries.

Standing on stile feet.

The condition overall is excellent antique condition, with general expected signs of use consistent with age. Very solid, sturdy and strong. All drawers opening easily and smoothly.

Height-92.5cm.

Width-95cm.

Depth-54cm.
