A super pair of antique parcel gilt wall mirrors dating to 1880.

Finished in their original off white gesso, with water-gilded inner slips.

Both in excellent overall condition, both framing mercury silvered mirror plates, which have light foxing.

Later papered backing boards.

Max sizes 100 cm x 88 cm. Mercury mirror plate sizes 75 cm x 62 cm.

Parcel gilding refers to a technique where only selective decorative areas of a frame are covered in gold leaf while the remaining surfaces are painted or left un-gilded. Popularised during the Victorian and Rococo Revival eras, these frames feature detailed composition ornament applied over a timber substrate.

Frames from this era were typically constructed with a pine or softwood core coated in gesso, decorated with moulded composition ornament, and completed with gold leaf gilding and cream or off-white paint finishes.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples frequently feature hand-carved joinery or timber backboards, natural degradation or light foxing on the glass plate, and areas of wear revealing underlying red bole or white gesso beneath the gilding.
