Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A trumeau mirror is a traditional French wall mirror set into a wooden panel, historically featuring a painted scene or carved relief above the glass plate. Originating in the eighteenth century, these panels were designed to fit into the panelling between windows or above fireplaces in French grand residences.

Traditional trumeau mirrors were constructed using solid wooden backings, hand-carved giltwood or plaster mouldings, and oil paintings on canvas or board. The mirror glass itself was typically mercury-backed or silvered glass framed within ornate moulding.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often display original hand-painted canvases, natural wood shrinkage on the backing panel, and subtle oxidisation or foxing on the mirror plate. Inspecting the reverse for hand-sawn timber and aged gilding with red bole layer underneath also helps confirm age.

Position a trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to create an elegant vertical focal point in a room. Pairing the classical Rococo detailing with minimalist or contemporary furnishings provides an engaging contrast in an eclectic space.

Dust the carved giltwood and painted panel gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry artist paintbrush. Avoid using liquid water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths on the painted canvas or gilded surfaces, as moisture can cause gilding to lift or paint to flake.
