A highly decorative and unusual 19th century French trumeau mirror featuring a charming hand-painted maritime scene set within an elegant gilt stucco frame. The upper panel displays an oil painting of a coastal harbour view with sailing vessels, figures on the shoreline and classical architectural elements in the background, beautifully capturing the romantic spirit of traditional maritime art.

The painting is enclosed within an ornate Rococo-style gilt surround with scrolling foliate decoration, which sits above the rectangular mirror plate. The mirror itself is framed by further carved and gilded detailing, all mounted on the original painted wooden backing board with a moulded cornice to the top.

Trumeau mirrors such as this were traditionally placed above fireplaces or between windows in French interiors, where they provided both decorative interest and reflected light around a room. The combination of painted panel and mirror makes these pieces particularly attractive and highly sought after for both period and contemporary interiors.

Dating from the 19th century, this example retains a lovely mellow patina with minor age-related wear consistent with its age, adding to its authentic character and charm.

A striking decorative piece ideal for a hallway, sitting room or bedroom.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in eighteenth-century France, the trumeau mirror was created to adorn the wooden wall panel spaces, or trumeaux, situated between windows or directly above fireplace mantels. These decorative units combined glass mirror plates with oil-painted canvas or carved wooden panels within unified architectural moulding frames.

Traditional French trumeau mirrors are constructed using painted softwood or hardwood backings, decorative carved gesso and giltwood frames, mercury or silvered glass mirror plates, and oil paintings executed on canvas or timber panels.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display evidence of age on the reverse timber joinery, natural oxidisation or foxing to the glass silvering, and subtle wear or craquelure across the painted and gilded surfaces.

A trumeau mirror is typically positioned above a fireplace mantel piece, console table, or hallway sideboard to establish a central focal point and enhance vertical proportions within traditional or eclectic interior spaces.

Maintain painted and gilded trumeau mirrors by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents on giltwood and painted panels, and ensure the piece is positioned away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
