Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pier mirrors, or trumeau mirrors, originated in French architecture to occupy the wall space between windows, known as the pier. Popular during the Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods, they were designed to reflect light back into the room and create symmetry within grand reception spaces.

Traditional French Neoclassical mirrors are constructed from a carved wooden core covered with layers of gesso. The decorative ornament, such as floral swags and ribbon knots, was moulded or hand-carved before gold leaf was applied using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period mirrors generally feature hand-sawn backboards, signs of natural age-related oxidisation or foxing on the glass, and red or grey clay bole showing through worn areas of gilding. Hand-carved joinery on the wooden framework also indicates traditional construction.

In modern interiors, a tall pier mirror functions effectively above a hallway console table, a fireplace mantel, or placed centrally between high windows to enhance vertical proportions and reflect natural light across the room.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid chipping fragile gesso or leaf. Avoid using water or liquid cleaners on gilded surfaces, and apply glass cleaner strictly to a cloth rather than spraying direct onto the mirror glass.
