Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A parcel gilt mirror combines a painted or natural timber frame with selective gilding applied to specific mouldings or raised detailing. During the Victorian period, oval formats with subtle gold leaf accents were frequently produced to soften architectural lines in drawing rooms and entryways.

These frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso to create a smooth surface. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques on selected borders, while the main frame was painted or left as polished timber alongside silvered plate glass.

Authentic pieces from around 1860 usually feature hand-cut wooden backboards, natural wear or slight flaking to the gesso, and subtle grey spotting or oxidisation on the original mirror plate. Gilding on genuine antiques shows varied tones and gentle rubbing through to the underlying bole.

Positioning an oval mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table creates an architectural focal point that reflects natural light. The soft cream and gold palette provides contrast against dark, moody paint colours or complements neutral, modern scheme designs.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry lint-free brush or feather duster, avoiding wet cloths on gesso or gilding to prevent dissolving the water-soluble glue beneath. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp cloth, ensuring water does not seep under the frame edges.
