Exhibit Antiques has dated this Georgian Engraved Glass Tumbler to the Georgian era.
A large and rare early 19th-century engraved Flip glass tumbler dating to c1830.
It has thick tapered sides with a central applied five band annulated ring.
The lower section is decorated with alternating broad and narrow deep flute cutting, leading down to a large polished pontil.
Standing an impressive 14 cm high and 11 cm in diameter, the tumbler holds approximately 800 ml (around 1½ pints), making it larger than most surviving flip tumblers.

Historic Context
The term 'flip tumbler' is generally used by collectors for a group of tumblers that tend to be larger and heavier than ordinary spirit tumblers, because Flip was a mixed drink based on ale and spirits rather than a neat spirit served in small quantities.
Flip tumblers were popular during the late Georgian and Regency periods. The form takes its name from the famous drink 'Flip', which was a mixture of ale, spirits, sugar and spices, traditionally heated with a red-hot poker. Although originally associated with this beverage, such tumblers were also used for ale, porter, punch, toddy and other mixed drinks. The large capacity of this example points to the possibility that it may have been intended for communal drinking or shared toasts, that were commonly associated with the consumption of Flip itself.
The fouled anchor is a long-established symbol of navigation, maritime trade and seafaring enterprise. The surrounding laurel wreath represents honour, achievement and success, whilst the vine and barley symbolise prosperity, abundance and commerce. Together they form a celebration of mercantile success and hospitality.
Unlike many commemorative maritime glasses which depict ships, naval victories or patriotic inscriptions, this example carries personal initials within the wreath, suggesting a private commission.
