This is a heavy antique public house fire back. An English, cast iron hearth reflector, dating to the Georgian period, circa 1800.

Firebacks were developed to protect the brickwork or stonework at the rear of an open fireplace from degradation caused by heat. Additionally, the dense cast iron absorbs thermal energy from the fire and radiates warmth back into the room long after the flames die down.

Historically, firebacks were produced using sand-casting techniques. Molten iron was poured into flat sand moulds impressed with carved wooden patterns, resulting in heavy, thick plates with detailed relief ornamentation on the front and a rougher texture on the back.
