A fireback is a heavy cast iron plate positioned against the rear wall of an open fireplace hearth. Its primary purpose is to protect the rear brickwork or masonry from heat deterioration while reflecting thermal energy back into the room.

Historic firebacks were constructed from pig iron melted in blast furnaces and poured into sand moulds. Carved wooden master patterns created low-relief pictorial motifs, beaded borders, and decorative crestings in the cast surface.
