Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fireback is a heavy cast iron plate placed against the rear wall of a fireplace. Historically designed from the sixteenth century onwards, it protects the masonry from intense thermal damage while reflecting heat outwards into the room.

Victorian firebacks were produced using sand casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into carved wooden or clay moulds. This process allowed detailed classical, heraldic, or mythological relief scenes to be reproduced in heavy metal.

Authentic antique firebacks feature subtle casting irregularities, surface pitted textures, and signs of genuine heat exposure or oxidisation on the reverse. Modern reproductions typically exhibit smoother backs, uniform casting lines, and lighter overall weight.

Beyond traditional installation within an open hearth or stove alcove, heavy cast iron firebacks are frequently mounted as architectural wall art in dining spaces or kitchens. They also serve as grounded focal points standing inside decorative, non-working fireplace surrounds.

Maintain cast iron by brushing away debris with a stiff wire brush and applying black grate polish or graphite paste to prevent surface rust. Keep the iron dry, avoiding water-based cleaning products that trigger immediate oxidisation.
