Antique Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver half hunter pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a few scratches.

The watch measures 48.5mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the three covers for London 1919 together with a sponsor’s mark of AGR for Arthur Rendell. In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

The front of the case has a small central lens surrounded by enamel filled Arabic numbers… it is quite unusual to see Arabic numbers on the front, rather than Roman numbers. The case has three small “dings” to the front, not too detrimental, and some fairly gentle unevenness to the back.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.

Inside, there is an acrylic lens which is in good condition.

The dial has blued steel hands, including the special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed. The minute hand is very slightly out of shape. The dial is in very nice condition.

The watch comes with an antique single chain with graduated links. The chain measures, 36cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. The chain weighs 30g.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half hunter pocket watch features a protective outer case over the dial with a central glass viewing window, allowing the user to tell time without opening the front cover.

Antique pocket watches were traditionally crafted with sterling silver, silver plate, or gold cases, featuring hand-wound mechanical movements and vitreous enamel dials.

Authentic pieces usually carry official hallmark stamps inside the case lids, indicating silver purity, city assay office marks, maker signatures, and date letters.

An antique pocket watch can be worn as traditional attire attached to a waistcoat with an Albert chain, or displayed on a specialized desk stand or under a glass dome.

Store the timepiece in a dry, low-humidity environment, clean the silver case with a soft microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced regularly by a qualified horologist.
