Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver butter knives emerged as distinct table utensils during the nineteenth century alongside the formalisation of dining etiquette. They were traditionally produced in sets for afternoon tea or formal breakfast service, featuring steel or silver blades paired with filled or solid sterling handles.

These knives typically feature hollow handles made of silver sheet filled with resin or pitch, attached securely to steel or silver blades. The presentation cases were constructed from timber, covered in leatherette or cloth, and lined internally with fitted velvet trays and silk or satin lids.

Authentic British pieces generally bear hallmarks stamped along the handle ferrules or near the base of the blade. Look for standard marks indicating silver purity, assay office symbols, date letters, and makers initials, as well as age-appropriate patination at the joins.

Display the set open inside its original presentation box on a dining room sideboard or drinks trolley to add historical texture to modern dining spaces. Alternatively, incorporate the individual knives into formal dining settings alongside contemporary tableware for an eclectic aesthetic.

Clean silver handles gently using a soft cloth and dedicated silver polish, avoiding hot water submersion which can loosen resin-filled handles. Store the set in its original fabric-lined case in a dry environment to minimise oxidisation and preserve the internal velvet and satin.
