Description

A good example of a set of 6 antique butter knives with sterling silver handles. They are good quality pieces with nicely shaped handles with decorative borders and curved blades.

Each piece is fully hallmarked for Sheffield, 1915 and the maker John Biggin.

They are in very good condition for their age. The handles have a few minor dents and dinks on and there is some minor wear around the edges of the blades however they display well as a set. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

The set comes in its original fitted box with a velvet and silk interior. The box is in good condition with some light scuffs and marks and small losses around the edges but nothing detrimental.

Approximate Measurements :

Length of Knife : 6 1/4" (16cm)

Box : 8" (20cm) x 6 1/2" (17cm)

Silver butter knives emerged as distinct table utensils during the nineteenth century alongside the formalisation of dining etiquette. Display the set open inside its original presentation box on a dining room sideboard or drinks trolley to add historical texture to modern dining spaces. Alternatively, incorporate the individual knives into formal dining settings alongside contemporary tableware for an eclectic aesthetic.
