Early C20th carved gilt-wood and gesso framed pier mirror of C18th George I period design in the manner of John Belchier .

The carved gilt-wood and incised gesso frame surrounding a shaped bevelled-edge mirror plate , the upper portion with a cut and engraved baronial coronet . The centre of the top of the frame carved with triple plumes or fronds , the base of the frame carved with a scallop shell motif . The whole with a period style incised ‘cris-crossed’ and ‘pounced’ ground of traditional design.

A superbly executed early C20th revival copy of an important early Georgian period gilt mirror in the manner of John Belchier. The gilded surface with an aged patina and finish , with traces of the red bole ground showing through the gilded gesso.

In excellent condition with no damage, losses or repairs.

*John Belchier (1699-1753) a cabinet-maker who worked at ‘The Sun’ , south side of St.Paul’s Churchyard , London , was renowned for this type of giltwood and cut-gesso work. His commissions included works for John Mellor at Erdigg, Wales and the Purefoy family of Buckinghamshire.
