Small Antique Windsor Chair with Crinoline Stretcher

19th century
Description

A good example of a small windsor chair dating from the mid 19th century. It has a low hooped back enclosing tapering spindles and a pierced back splat. It has a shaped elm seat and it stands on ring turned legs joined by a crinoline stretcher.

The chair is in good original condition and it has developed a lovely rich patina where the stain has worn attractively on the seat and the arms where it has been handled. There are signs of age and use, some light marks and knocks on the seat and around the legs but nothing detrimental and no major damages. There are some minor signs of historic worm in places which has all been treated as a precaution. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

It is a small size, probably made originally as a small ladies chair. The chair stands approximately 33 1/2" (85cm) high, the seat is 13 1/2" (34cm) deep and 15 3/4" (40cm) high and arm to arm the chair is 18" (46cm) wide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Windsor chair is characterised by a solid wooden seat into which the chair legs, back spindles, and arm supports are directly socketed, rather than using standard corner-frame joinery. Originating in England during the early 18th century, these chairs were made by specialized craftsmen using local hardwoods.

Windsor chairs typically combine multiple timber species selected for their specific structural properties, such as elm for the carved seat, yew or ash for steam-bent bows, and beech for turned legs. Components are joined using wedged mortise and tenon joints without reliance on complex glue framing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-shaped saddle seats, hand-turned legs, and evidence of steam-bending on the hooped back rails. Wear to the front stretchers, original surface patination in crevices, and irregular hand-carved details further indicate historic production.

A traditional Windsor armchair serves as a functional accent piece in entrance halls, study corners, or placed beside a fireplace. Combining the natural timber tone with contemporary neutral palettes or modern textiles provides contrast within minimalist or rustic schemes.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice annually. Avoid direct exposure to heat sources and damp environments to prevent timber movement, cracking, or joint separation.
