19th‑century Wheel‑back Windsor Armchair

19th century
Description

A charming wheel‑back Windsor armchair in elm and beech, with a pierced wheel splat, turned spindles and shaped arms. The generously carved elm saddle seat shows attractive grain and warm colour, with a comfortable seat height of 44cm. The chair stands on turned legs united by an H‑stretcher, offering excellent stability and the honest, practical charm associated with regional Windsor work. There are small traces of historic woodworm, entirely inactive and long since treated, mentioned only for accuracy. Overall, a decorative and practical Windsor with lovely colour and age‑earned character — ideal for a kitchen, hallway, or as a welcoming accent in any traditional or eclectic interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wheel-back Windsor armchair is a traditional style of English wooden seating characterised by a central pierced back splat containing a wheel design, surrounded by turned spindles anchored directly into a solid carved seat.

Windsor chairs typically combine multiple regional timbers chosen for specific properties: elm for the carved saddle seat, steam-bent yew or ash for the outer hoop and armbows, and beech or fruitwood for the turned legs and spindles.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned components, wedge-tenon joinery visible where the legs penetrate the top of the seat, irregular hand-carved tool marks underneath, and natural patination around wear areas like armrests and stretchers.

A Windsor chair functions as a standalone accent chair beside a fireplace, as a desk chair in a home study, or integrated alongside modern minimalist dining furniture to add textural depth.

Clean the wood with a soft, lint-free cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber and protect the original surface finish from drying or cracking.
