Walnut & Oak Georgian Moonphase Longcase Clock

18th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is proud to offer this grand oak and walnut moonphase longcase clock for sale. Dating from the reign of George II circa 1730 this is a superior clock of the period with the lovely oak case being inlaid to the hood door, chamfered trunk edges and decorative front trunk panels with desirable burr walnut. Boxwood inlay is also present providing further interest to the case which is mounted on its original pediment and the trunk door retains a working lock. The case is surmounted by a hood with swan-neck pediment and fluted outset columns with Corinthian brass capitals. A single finial and brass paterae adorn the hood.

The twelve inch arched moonphase dial has been restored with the maker's name 'John Holdroyd' engraved into the chapter ring. This delightful clock has a fourth hand indicating the date and the dial has decorative rings around the winding holes within the matted centre and original mask spandrels to the dial corners. Arabic minute markers and half hour fleur de lys patterns adorn the chapter ring and a subsidiary seconds dial and original hands complete the grand appearance.

The eight day, rack-striking anchor escapement movement has just been serviced and strikes the hours on a very pleasing bell.

Standing at 7 feet 5 inches tall this is a tasteful example of a fine longcase clock which comes with my three year guarantee.

Delivery is available, please enquire for details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian moonphase longcase clock is a weight-driven pendulum clock housed in a tall wooden cabinet, produced during the Georgian era between 1714 and 1837. It incorporates an astronomical dial mechanism that tracks the lunar cycle alongside standard timekeeping.

These cases were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, often enriched with crossbanded timber veneers. The clockworks feature brass plates, hand-cut steel components, and brass or silvered dial plates with spandrel detailing.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut steel hands, brass or silvered dials, and rolling moon disks decorated with painted or engraved lunar imagery. The case joinery should exhibit hand-crafted dovetails, original weight pulleys, and historic oxidation on unpolished internal timber surfaces.

Position the clock in an entrance hall, hallway, or dining space to serve as an architectural focal point. Pairing dark timber tones with neutral wall paint and contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources, radiators, and damp conditions to prevent wood movement and veneer cracking. The internal mechanism should be leveled precisely and serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
