Stunning George III Oak Longcase Clock

18th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to offer this magnificent Georgian longcase clock from South Shields. The maker is John Pile, a clock maker of some repute recorded working in Newcastle from 1782 to 1797.

Dating from circa 1785 this fabulous inlaid and cross banded oak clock stands at an impressive 7 feet 8 inches tall on bracket feet. The case has a lovely rich colour and patina with boxwood inlay to the base and the trunk. The decorative door retains its original lock and key and there are chamfered edges to the trunk with scrolling boxwood inlay. The hood is surmounted by elegant original fretwork and a central pediment with finial. There is dentil work to both the hood and upper trunk and the glazed door is flanked by tapered reeded columns with brass capitals at each end.

The 13 inch painted arched dial is in lovely condition depicting a rural scene with a lady gazing at her suitor and with flowers to each corner. The white enamel dial has a subsidiary seconds dial and is signed ‘John Pile, South Shields’ and has a working date window and the charming appearance is finished off with original fine hands.

The eight day four pillar rack striking movement strikes the full hours on a beautiful bell. The movement has been serviced and as such carries my three year guarantee.

Delivery and a video of the clock working/striking is available, please enquire for details.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clocks from the George III period, spanning 1760 to 1820, typically feature tall, free-standing timber cases housing weight-driven pendulum movements, often finished with hand-painted dials and decorative pediments.

These timepieces were primarily crafted from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, complemented by brass clockwork movements, iron weights, and painted enamel or brass dials.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, cast brass or iron movement plates with period hand-forged components, genuine patination on the wood, and hand-painted or engraved dial lettering.

Position the clock as an architectural focal point in a hallway, entrance foyer, or dining space, balancing its substantial visual weight against neutral wall finishes and modern artwork.

Store the clock in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight, apply clear beeswax to the wooden casing twice annually, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
