Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian library bookcases produced around 1880 are characterised by their two-tier structure, comprising a glazed upper section for book storage and a solid timber cupboard base. They frequently feature deep moulded cornices, carved decorative corbels, and rich mahogany construction suited for formal domestic interiors.

Cabinetmakers during the nineteenth century predominantly utilised solid mahogany and rich wood veneers. Structural construction typically includes hand-cut dovetail joints, glass panes set within timber door frames, internal adjustable shelving, and heavy plinth bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics such as hand-cut joinery, original brass lock mechanisms, and secondary woods like pine or oak used for backboards and drawer interiors. The glass may show slight waves or imperfections typical of nineteenth-century glass manufacturing.

Large mahogany bookcases function well in living rooms, formal dining areas, or dedicated home offices. Placing dark timber furniture against contemporary neutral walls creates visual contrast, while displaying ceramics or art alongside books modernises the overall presentation.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
