Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian bookcases typically feature solid mahogany or oak construction, glazed door panels, and rectangular plinth bases. Design elements often incorporate Gothic or classical architectural motifs, such as pointed arches or tracery detailing along the upper glazing.

Cabinet makers predominantly used Cuban or Honduran mahogany, oak, and walnut for the primary frame, paired with hand-cut glass panes. Interior shelving and back panels were often constructed from secondary timbers such as pine or deal.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of traditional joinery, including hand-dovetailed drawer joints, original brass locks, and subtle irregularities in the glass panes. Natural oxidisation and light wear to the original finish on internal shelves also indicate historical age.

Position the piece against contemporary painted walls in muted or dark tones to highlight the warm mahogany hues. Balance the interior shelves by styling books alongside ceramic vessels, architectural objects, and glassware.

Dust surfaces regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade natural beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
