Mid-victorian Mahogany Glazed Bookcase Above Cupboard

19th century
Description

"A fine mahogany mid-Victorian glazed bookcase above cupboard of classical influence, featuring adjustable shelves enclosed behind original glazed doors. The glass retains the characteristic air bubbles and irregularities associated with period manufacture.

Below sits a single long drawer above a pair of carved cupboard doors, enriched with applied acanthus mouldings and swag decoration. Raised on bun feet, the piece has particularly pleasing proportions and a well-aged surface that has developed considerable depth over time.

For those seeking a larger library or display arrangement, a closely related companion bookcase is also available separately. This unit seperates into two sections to ease transportation.

Condition Report

In excellent antique condition. Both glazed door stiles have developed a slight historic bow, resulting in a small gap between the glass and right stile in the middle. The left-hand glazed door is missing its original pull. Both points are purely cosmetic and do not affect use. Wear is otherwise commensurate with age.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch."

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-Victorian glazed bookcases typically feature an upper section with glass doors set above a solid base cupboard or set of drawers. Popularised during the mid-nineteenth century, these pieces were designed for private libraries and drawing rooms to display books and decorative objects while protecting them from dust.

Primary timber was frequently mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with French polish to highlight the grain. Glass panels were hand-blown or float glass, while drawer linings and backings were constructed from solid pine or deal.

Authentic pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-carved decorative motifs, and original iron or brass hardware. Look for natural age-related wear, hand-planed back boards, and slight imperfections in the original glass panes.

Anchor a living room, dining space, or home office with the cabinet, balancing filled bookshelf tiers with decorative ceramics or glassware. The dark timber contrasts effectively against neutral, muted walls or deep modern colour schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year following the timber grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, and finish deterioration.
