We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century open bookcases are characterized by unglazed, exposed shelving that allowed easy access to literary collections. They frequently draw from Georgian and Victorian architectural motifs, featuring stepped cornices, fluted side columns, and tongue-and-groove wood backings.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised native hardwoods such as oak and mahogany, alongside pine or walnut. High-status pieces often featured solid wood fronts combined with pine secondary timber for backboards and interior structural elements.

Look for signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery, variable board thicknesses, and tongue-and-groove back construction. Original pieces also exhibit natural oxidisation of the timber inside joints and underneath the shelves.

Integrate an open bookcase into a room by combining stacked books with ceramic vessels, framed artwork, and decorative objects. Leaving empty space around select items prevents visual clutter while accentuating the architectural lines of the timber frame.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood surface. Keep the bookcase away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage and warping.
