Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian open-top mahogany bookcases typically feature exposed upper shelving for books or decorative items positioned above a solid cabinet base. Constructed from rich mahogany timber, these pieces often feature architectural elements such as moulded cornices, flame veneer door panels, and decorative scroll corbels.

Cabinetmakers during the nineteenth century used solid mahogany framework often combined with mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcasses. Joinery technique highlights include hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings and panelled cupboard doors designed to accommodate natural timber expansion.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, including minor irregularity in dovetail cuts, original brass hardware or locks, and natural oxidation on the backboards. Look for original hand-planed secondary woods such as pine or oak along the cabinet interior and rear paneling.

A large mahogany bookcase can anchor a study, living room, or hallway by mixing bound volumes with modern ceramic vessels and framed art. Balancing traditional dark timber against neutral wall shades creates a grounded focal point in contemporary spaces.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the original finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol cleaners containing silicones.
