Regency Rectangular Giltwood Overmantle Mirror

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Early 19th Century Regency Period Giltwood And Gesso Rectangular Overmantle Mirror, Having Replacement Triple Sectioned Mirror Plates, Set Within Gilt Ball And Moulded Frame Borders, Surmounted by Elegant Foliate Carved Scrolling Decoration, Flanking Superbly Carved Ebonised Eagle Set On Rocks Holding Tasselled Chains.

As suggested with the name overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian and Regency homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sized and qualities and this is a quite exceptional example.

The carved eagle and foliage surmount to this specific overmantle mirror is really quite a lovely addition and something which we have only come across very rarely before. It is superbly well executed and remains in good, solid condition.

The gilding on this particular mirror appears to have never been redone, which means that it retains a lovely deep golden colour to it and is just incredibly tactile. The mirror plates are almost certainly replaced as they remain in pretty good condition overall with justa. few very small areas of silvering.

There are of course quite a few old marks, scuffs, scrapes, scratches and repairs which are consumate with the age and design for a piece of this style. As with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency overmantel mirror is a architectural wall mirror created during the British Regency era, specifically designed to sit directly above a fireplace hearth. These mirrors often incorporate classical motifs, tripartite glass configurations, and gilded timber frames.

Regency mirrors were constructed using carved wood or composition ornament applied to pine or lime frameworks, finished with water or oil gilding. The glass panels were mercury-gilded plate glass, often framed with ebonised wooden slips.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery on the wooden backing, signs of age-related oxidation or foxing on the glass, and genuine gold leaf gilding over red or grey bole clay bases.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room chimneypiece, or mount it over a hallway console table to reflect natural light and create a visual focal point in contemporary or classic spaces.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a dry soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners which dissolve traditional gilding glues. Clean the mirror glass using a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from the frame edges.
