A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Giltwood & Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Of Unusually Small Proportions, Having Replacement Triple Mirror Plates Within Ebonised Reeded Slips, Encompassed By Well Carved, Elegant, Half Turned Columns To Border.

As the name suggests overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian, Regency & Victorian homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sizes and qualities and this is a particularly pleasant example without being overly elaborate and overpowering. It is also an excellent small size making it much more versatile than many.

Overall the condition is very good, with just the expected old marks, scrapes, scuffs and digs which are now blended into the surface around the frame and replaced mirror plates. These mirror plates are not brand new, indeed best guess would be that they may be 50 to 80 years old, therefore there is a nice bit of aging on them whilst they still remain very much functional.

As with all items which we offer for sale this mirror has been attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, ensuring it is in its best possible condition and ready for immediate placement in the home before being placed on sale.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in Regency and Victorian homes during the 19th century, designed specifically to fit the dimensions above a fireplace chimney breast. They functioned both to reflect candlelight across drawing rooms and to display decorative wealth through elaborate gilding and classical architectural mouldings.

These mirrors were constructed using timber frames layered with gesso, a plaster-like mixture, which was hand-carved before gold leaf was applied. The glass plates were typically compartmentalised using ebonised or gilded dividers, with the mirrored glass chemically backed using mercury or early silvering techniques.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age such as slight foxing or oxidisation on the mirror plate, hand-carved or molded gesso details, and natural wear showing the reddish clay bolus layer beneath worn gilding. The back of the frame typically displays hand-sawn wood backings and aged metal fixing rings.

An overmantel mirror is positioned centrally above a fireplace or a contemporary console table to create an architectural focal point. The warm gold leaf and ebonised details provide visual contrast against matte paint finishes, neutral colour schemes, or modern panelling.

Dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners which dissolve gold leaf and gesso. Clean the mirror glass plates carefully with a lightly damp microfibre cloth, ensuring no moisture touches the gilded frame.
