Antique French Gilt Bronze Baroque Clock - Fully Restored and Working

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A large and highly decorative antique French Baroque drumhead clock, exquisitely cast in richly gilded bronze. The clock is raised upon a cushion-shaped base, beautifully modelled with flowing forms that evoke the movement of the sea, with stylised mythical sea creatures emerging to form the scrolling feet. Above, a bold gadrooned support rises like a cresting wave, carrying the drum case, which is framed by elaborate openwork scrolls.

Above, a bold gadrooned support rises like a cresting wave, carrying the drum case, which is framed by elaborate openwork scrolls. These finely chased mounts, reminiscent of swirling sea spray, frame the dial of gilt bronze, mounted with twelve individual enamel cartouches and fitted with blued steel hands, harmonising elegantly with the richly worked surround. The rear bezel is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition with just some very slight marks.

Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baroque style French clocks are defined by their dramatic ornamentation, symmetry, and theatricality. They frequently feature intricate cast scrollwork, foliage motifs, and ornate finials executed in gilt bronze or brass.

These clocks typically combine cast bronze or brass casings with fire-gilded gold finishes, known as ormolu. Clock dials often incorporate white enamel cartouche Roman numerals alongside glass crystals protecting the mechanical movement.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast bronze with hand-chased details visible under close examination. Look for period-appropriate mechanical pendulum movements, individual enamel numerals, and natural wear or slight patination on un-gilded areas.

A Baroque clock acts as a dramatic focal point when displayed against dark accent walls or minimalist marble surfaces. Positioning the piece on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table balances historic craftsmanship with modern interior design schemes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to clean recessed scrollwork. Avoid liquid polish, water, or abrasive chemicals, as these can strip the delicate gilding layer from the underlying bronze.
