Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Campana urn is a bell-shaped vessel derived from classical Greco-Roman pottery, characterised by a flared rim, deep fluted body, and stepped pedestal base. Popularised during the Neoclassical period and Victorian era, these urns became standard architectural elements in formal landscape and garden design across Europe.

Traditional cast iron urns were created by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, often produced in distinct modular sections such as the rim, body, stem, and plinth. Once cooled, the individual components were secured using threaded central iron rods or bolts, creating a durable vessel engineered for exterior exposure.

Authentic antique cast iron pieces typically display visible casting seam lines, substantial weight consistent with solid iron, and naturally layered patination from decades of outdoor exposure, including oxidisation and flaking historic paint finishes. Modern reproductions frequently lack crisp casting definition, exhibit lighter overall weight, or display uniform artificial distressing.

Positioning a pair of cast iron urns on either side of an entrance doorway, gateway, or garden path creates a formal symmetrical focal point. Indoors, they can be displayed empty as sculptural architectural accents within a hallway, porch, or framed alongside a fireplace hearth.

To preserve the existing patina without causing structural rust, clean the metal surfaces gently using a soft brush and clean water, avoiding harsh chemical paint strippers. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax or outdoor rust-inhibiting sealant will stabilise the metal and protect weathered paint layers from further decay.
