Small 19th Century Mahogany Bow Front Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A charming and practical 19th century mahogany bow front chest of drawers, of compact proportions and attractive form. This elegant piece is constructed in beautifully figured mahogany, displaying warm colour and a pleasing natural grain that has developed a mellow patina through age and use.

The chest is arranged with two short drawers above two long graduated drawers, offering useful storage while maintaining balanced proportions. Each drawer is fitted with period oval brass handles and escutcheons, complementing the simple classical design of the piece. The drawers are traditionally constructed with dovetail joints, reflecting the quality craftsmanship typical of the period.

The gently bowed front gives the chest a refined and elegant appearance, while also enhancing the figure of the mahogany across the drawer fronts. The sides retain their original rich colour and show the honest wear expected of antique furniture.

Raised on splayed bracket feet, the chest has a light and graceful stance that makes it ideal for smaller spaces. Its modest size makes it particularly versatile, suitable for use in a bedroom, hallway, landing or sitting room.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bow front chest of drawers features a convex, gently curved front facade designed to soften the outline of traditional rectangular furniture. Popularised during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this style showcased advanced cabinetmaking techniques and decorative wood veneers.

These pieces were commonly constructed using timber frames faced with flame mahogany veneers, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings. Secondary woods like pine or oak were used for interior panels, while hardware consisted of cast or stamped brass handles.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetails, hand-planed marks on back panels, and natural shrinkage across wood grain surfaces. Original brass hardware typically shows genuine patination and irregular fixing holes aligned with period lock mechanisms.

Position the chest in an entryway, living area, or bedroom, pairing its warm wood tones with contemporary artwork or structured ceramic vessels on top. The organic curved front creates visual interest against clean architectural lines.

Keep mahogany pieces away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer lift, or discolouration. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain, avoiding silicone sprays and abrasive cleaners.
