George III Bow Front Mahogany Chest of Drawers, Circa 1800

19th century
Description

A handsome George III mahogany bow front chest of drawers dating to circa 1800, offering elegant proportions, rich colour, and timeless Georgian appeal.

Crafted in beautifully figured mahogany, the chest is of classic bow front form, a design much admired for its graceful lines and refined simplicity. The configuration comprises two short drawers above two long graduated drawers, providing practical storage while maintaining balanced proportions. The drawers retain attractive brass lion mask ring handles, which suit the period character beautifully.

Standing on shaped bracket feet, the chest possesses a strong architectural presence while retaining the elegance associated with late Georgian furniture. The top displays lovely figuring and warm patination, with the overall surface having developed the mellow depth and character only genuine age can provide.

A wonderfully versatile antique, this chest would work equally well in a bedroom, hallway, sitting room or country house interior, blending seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary schemes.

A classic and highly decorative Georgian chest with excellent colour, useful proportions, and enduring appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III bow front chest of drawers is a storage cabinet produced during the reign of King George III (17601820), characterised by a convex, gently curved front facade designed to soften the angular lines of a room.

Georgian chests were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, featuring oak or pine drawer linings with hand-cut dovetail joints and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn construction marks, irregular dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, original brass escutcheons, and natural timber shrinkage appropriate to the late 18th or early 19th century.

A Georgian mahogany chest functions well as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, paired with contemporary artwork, a modern table lamp, or neutral textured walls to contrast the dark timber tones.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and harsh heat sources.
