Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, also known historically as a chimney glass, is a specialized mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularized in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these architectural frames were proportioned to fill the chimney breast, maximising natural light and creating a focal point in reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century gilt frames were typically constructed using a carved softwood or hardwood base layered with gessoa mixture of chalk and binder. Intricate decorative elements were moulded in gesso or carved wood, coated with clay bole, and finished with fine gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period gilt mirrors show natural signs of age, such as subtle cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, rubbing that reveals the reddish or dark clay bole underneath the gold leaf, and original pine backing boards. Original mirror glass often exhibits light oxidisation, known as foxing, rather than a uniform modern reflective surface.

A large gilded mirror creates visual contrast when paired with contemporary minimalist furniture or placed against dark, dramatic paint shades. Beyond mounting above a traditional fireplace, it can be styled leaning against a living room wall or positioned above a hallway console table to reflect light and add architectural depth.

To preserve delicate gilding and gesso, remove dust using a soft dry brush or feather duster without liquid cleaners, which dissolve water-gilded gold leaf and soften gesso. Glass surfaces should be cleaned carefully using a damp cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep under the edges into the frame moulding.
