Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early 19th century during the British Regency period, these mirrors are characterised by neoclassical architecture, horizontal proportions, and decorative friezes. They frequently incorporate classical motifs such as fluted columns, acanthus leaves, rosettes, and shell crests, often highlighted with gilding.

Frames were typically constructed from softwood carcases faced with carved timber or molded gesso. Finishes involved gold leaf gilding over a reddish bole ground, sometimes paired with dark ebonised accents, while the glass plate was silvered using a mercury process.

Authentic period mirrors feature timber backing boards with natural age darkening, hand-carved joinery, and minor foxing or oxidisation on the original glass. The gilded surface should exhibit uneven wear, showing traces of red bole or gray gesso beneath the gold leaf.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast, mantelpiece, or long sideboard to create an architectural focal point. Combining classical gilded proportions with clean modern architecture provides visual structure and reflects light throughout the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent debris build-up in delicate gesso details. Avoid liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical sprays, as moisture can dissolve animal hide glues and lift fragile gold leaf.
