Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century triple plate overmantel mirror is characterised by a wide horizontal frame containing three distinct glass sections, designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. These mirrors often incorporate classical architectural detail, including pilasters, friezes, and gilded ornamentation.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from carved timber, such as pine, covered with moulded gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. The mirror plates were made using hand-blown glass coated with mercury or silver alloy backing.

Authentic Regency mirrors display classic design elements such as spiral-twist or fluted columns, stepped cornices, and motifs like shells, acanthus leaves, or floral rosettes. The glass usually exhibits slight imperfections, depth variations, or soft grey spotting known as foxing.

Mount the mirror above a living room fireplace hearth or set it atop a dining room sideboard to add depth and reflect light. Combining historical giltwood detailing with contemporary furniture creates balanced contrast in modern spaces.

Dust the giltwood frame gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning sprays which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the glass plates separately by applying liquid cleaner sparingly to a cloth rather than spraying the surface directly.
