Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency overmantel mirrors typically feature low-profile rectangular frames designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They often incorporate architectural elements such as reeded columns, corner blocks, and Classical mouldings inspired by Greek and Roman motifs.

These mirrors were constructed with soft timber frames coated in gesso and decorated with plaster, then finished with gold leaf application known as water gilding or oil gilding. The reflective plates were historically made from hand-blown plate glass backed with a silver or mercury amalgam.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as light foxing on the glass plate, hand-cut wooden backing boards, and natural wear to the gilding revealing red bole or grey gesso beneath. The weight of original plate glass and hand-carved frame joinery also help distinguish authentic items from modern reproductions.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace to serve as an architectural focal point that reflects ambient light. Combining warm gold leaf finishes with modern neutral paint palettes creates a balanced contrast between historic structure and contemporary design.

Avoid using water, chemical sprays, or liquid polishes on gilt surfaces, as moisture dissolves gesso and loosens fragile gold leaf. Remove dust gently using a dry, soft brush, and clean the glass plate separately with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth to prevent moisture from reaching the frame edges.
