Fine 19th Century Giltwood Overmantel Mirror Depicting “Anania and Her Chariot”

19th century
Description

A striking and decorative 19th century giltwood overmantel mirror of classical inspiration, surmounted by a richly detailed frieze depicting the mythological scene of “Anania and her chariot.” The finely cast relief features a dynamic procession with figures, horses and chariot, accompanied by a winged figure in flight, all rendered with excellent depth and movement.

The frame is flanked by fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals, supporting a moulded cornice with dentil detailing, giving the piece strong architectural presence. The original bevelled mirror plate sits neatly within the frame, adding light and depth while complementing the warm gilded finish.

Elegant and imposing, this mirror would sit beautifully above a fireplace, bringing a refined neoclassical feel to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical overmantel mirrors feature architectural elements inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design, such as classical bas-relief friezes, Corinthian pilasters, and ball moulding along the upper cornice.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved timber frame, usually pine or lime wood, coated in gesso plaster, and finished with applied gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period examples display signs of natural age including dark oxidisation, light cracking along the gesso joints known as craquelure, subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or grey clay bole beneath, and minor distortion or foxing on the glass plate.

Mount the mirror directly above a fireplace mantle or place it atop a contemporary console table to create visual contrast against neutral walls and minimalist furnishings.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which dissolve water-gilded finishes and damage the delicate gesso moulding.
