Xl Edwardian Oil Painting a May Day Friedrich Von Kaulbach 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

You are viewing an incredible Edwardian oil painting after the German artist Friedrich von Kaulbach

The original is called 'A May Day' and is nearly six feet wide 178 CM so very big

Subject & composition: The painting depicts an elegant outdoor pastoral gathering. In the foreground, a richly dressed woman distributes food or fruit to a group of children, creating a charming domestic and allegorical scene of charity and abundance. To the right, a small group of adults sit at a table beneath trees, engaged in conversation and refreshment, while to the left children play in a wooded landscape.

Style & period: The composition, costumes, and painterly handling are strongly reminiscent of 17th–18th century Flemish or Dutch genre painting, in the manner of Rubens, Teniers, or later Continental romanticised pastoral scenes. The figures are lively and theatrical, with expressive gestures and warm colouring.

Landscape: The background opens to a rolling countryside with trees, distant fields, and a soft, atmospheric sky, giving depth and a sense of Arcadian calm. Palette & technique: Rich, warm tones—deep greens, browns, and soft flesh colours—are combined with highlights in silk garments and foliage. The brushwork is confident and layered, suggesting an accomplished academic or atelier-trained hand (likely later 19th-century historicist in style)

Frame: The painting is housed in an impressive, heavily carved giltwood frame with scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs, typical of Baroque or Rococo revival frames, adding grandeur and decorative presence

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian figurative paintings from the early twentieth century often depict outdoor gatherings, genre scenes, and historicised figure groups using soft light, naturalistic tones, and detailed brushwork.

Artists typically applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, housing the finished work in heavy cast-gesso and gilded timber frames.

Look for natural surface craquelure across the paint layer, authentic patination on the gilded frame moulding, period-correct canvas stretchers, and artist signatures consistent with early 1900s techniques.

Mount the large framed artwork above a sideboard or chimneypiece in a formal room to create an anchor point that contrasts traditional fine art with modern furnishings.

Display the canvas away from direct sunlight, heating elements, and high humidity, dusting the frame softly with a dry brush without using liquid cleansers.
