William and Constance Mair by Arthur Percy Dixon Edwardian Oil Portrait Painting of Children

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming early circa 1910 oil portrait on canvas in an oval mount depicting William and Constance Mair by Arthur Percy Dixon (act. 1884-1917).

ABOUT ARTIST : Arthur Percy Dixon (act. 1884-1917)

Dixon was a well-regarded painter of portraits, scenes and landscapes who studied at The Royal Scottish Academy Life School. He began his studies in Hull before his family moved to Edinburgh where he spent much of his life. His studio was based at 47 York Place and he exhibited widely including in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.

This fine example of Edwardian portraiture was almost certainly a commission and probably painted during Dixon’s time in Edinburgh. Here we see the young Constance sitting on a chair and holding open a book while her older brother looks over towards the coloured plates displayed within it.

An obituary in The Scotsman from 1917 refers to him as a popular character: “Noone could fail to admire his genial, kindly nature. He had gone in the full fruition of his art.”

The portrait is signed/dated and housed within a splendid foliate frame which is probably the original..

Edwardian portraiture refers to fine art produced in Britain between 1901 and 1910, characterised by naturalistic lighting, formal or domestic compositions, and a transition toward softer palettes relative to earlier Victorian styles.

These works were created using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, often housed within heavy timber frames featuring cast gesso decoration and gilded leaf finishes.

Authenticity is evaluated through timber stretcher construction, period-appropriate craquelure patterns across the oil film, artist signatures, and aging characteristics on the gesso backing.

An antique oil painting can be styled as a central feature above a fireplace mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing historic artwork with contemporary furniture to create visual contrast.

Maintain the canvas by hanging it away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat sources, dusting the frame lightly with a soft brush, and avoiding liquid chemical cleaners.
