19th century
Description

• Adriano Bonifazi (1848 1914)

• Bonifazi displaying early talent, was trained in Rome's most prestigious Art Institute.

• He quickly established himself in Rome and Capri - to become one of Italy’s leading late 19th C portrait Artists favoured by wealthy Italians and tourists who were amazed by his ability to produce ‘picture perfect’ portraits of superb quality and detail.

• His decorative works are found in collections in both Europe and America, including an example his work in the V&A Museum London. He tended to concentrate on relatively small portraits and his auction record for one work is over £30,000 in America. Quite a number of his works of the quality now offered are currently sold as prints throughout North America and Europe.

• This pair of paintings are both signed and dated Capri 1877 and are painted on top quality panels which produce some of the most stable surfaces to paint on.

Shipping

Other than a few smaller items that can be safely posted, nearly all items are hand delivered (and set up in the case of clocks) by Martin Bros who are one of Britain’s most prestigious carriers of antiques and fine art. I wish us avoid the hassle of cheap men and their vans! The standard (subsidised) delivery price shown is for mainland UK excluding Scotland. Please ask for a Quotation where the standard price is not applicable.

Restoration and Presented Condition

I do not subscribe to the shabby chic or make it like new approach using modern materials which can make future restoration extremely difficult and impede long-term investment value.

Any restoration work is done to the highest (museum) standards using traditional materials so as to not compromise the patina of age.

Accordingly, please note some antique items for sale will have wear and marks associated with use over many generations that adds to the aesthetic beauty of the piece from the collector’s perspective.

Fine Art - Condition

All Paintings offered have been chosen for their excellent original condition, with where necessary museum standard cleaning, restoration and revarnishing. Presented in Gallery condition they are ready to hang for many generations, before cleaning / revarnishing may be necessary.

Any Questions?

I just love acquiring and talking about antiques and fine art so will be pleased to discuss any of the items I have for sale on UK 07515 741344 or Richard.lench1956@gmail.com.

Best wishes Richard

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian portrait artists frequently focused on genre subjects and local figures from coastal areas such as Capri and Naples. These works combined realist brushwork with idealised regional attire, capturing traditional head coverings, coral jewellery, and specific light conditions of the Mediterranean.

Artists employed oil pigments ground with linseed or walnut oil on fine flax canvas or wooden panels. Framing from this period commonly featured carved timber coated in red bole clay and finished with hand-applied gold leaf using traditional water gilding techniques.

Authenticity is evaluated through artist signatures, contemporary dates, visible craquelure patterns consistent with age, and period-correct stretchers or panels. Examination under ultraviolet light helps identify original varnish layer integrity versus later restoration or repainting.

Detailed antique portraits in gilded frames create focal points when hung individually above consoles or arranged in curated gallery walls. Placing dark or gilded classical art against neutral contemporary wall palettes highlights the frame craftsmanship and historical artwork.

Oil paintings should be displayed away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and fluctuating humidity to prevent canvas warp or pigment cracking. Dusting must be carried out gently with a soft badger-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on both the painted surface and delicate gold leaf decorative frame.
