Gilt Bronze Art Nouveau Urn Centrepiece Vase After Henry Dasson

Later than 1960
Description

A mid to late 20th century gilt bronze ornamental urn, made after the designs of Henry Dasson, and stamped “Henry Dasson” to the front of the base. The urn is of trophy form, with a bronze body and gilt bronze mounts, and is designed as a decorative sculptural vase or centrepiece.

The piece features elaborate floral handles in the Art Nouveau taste, each surmounted by a ho-ho bird, with flowing naturalistic forms typical of decorative revival pieces inspired by 19th century French design. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau and Rococo Revival metalwork features flowing organic forms, botanical foliage, asymmetric curves, and elaborate scrolls. Late nineteenth-century French artisans combined these naturalistic motifs with traditional casting techniques to create dramatic decorative vessels.

These vessels were cast in bronze using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details. Selected areas were finished with mercury gilding or chemical patination to create contrasting gold and dark tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit significant weight, precise hand-chasing on foliage and figures, and often feature cast signatures, foundry stamps, or inventory numbers near the base or rim.

Position the urn as a focal ornament on a dining table, marble mantelpiece, or wooden sideboard. Pair it with neutral backdrops to allow the contrasting gilding and patinated metalwork to stand out.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush to clean intricate recesses. Avoid chemical polish, abrasive cleaners, and water, which can strip gilding and damage original patination.
