Carl Thieme Dresden Allegorical Figure Groups “Summer” and “Winter”, Four Seasons Series, C. 1902

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely modelled pair of Dresden porcelain figure groups representing the seasonal allegories “Summer” and “Winter”, produced by the Carl Thieme factory in Potschappel near Dresden, known internationally as Dresden Porcelain. Established in 1872, the firm specialised in decorative and luxury porcelain of high artistic quality.

The compositions are arranged as cabinet-scale tableaux with a boy and girl on oval gilt-edged bases, showing refined modelling and particularly expressive hand-painted faces and details. The “Summer” group illustrates harvest time, with the boy holding a sickle beside wheat sheaves and the girl with floral garland and mandolin, the intact sickle being a notable and uncommon survival.

The “Winter” group shows a cold-season rural scene with a boy on a sledge holding an axe and a girl warming her hands over a small fire pot, dressed in traditional Eastern Slavic winter costume reflecting a popular folk-inspired theme of the period.

Both pieces carry impressed SP Dresden marks with model numbers 7018F and 7020F, together with the export designation Foreign, confirming their international market production.

A highly decorative and collectible seasonal pair from Carl Thieme’s Four Seasons series, valued for quality, subject matter, and balanced presentation.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Saxony during the eighteenth century and continuing into the early twentieth century, Dresden porcelain manufacturers specialised in elaborate decorative wares. Allegorical figure groups depicting themes such as the Four Seasons or classical elements were highly popular in European decorative art, reflecting Rococo aesthetics and symbolic personification.

These figures were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, cast in multi-part press moulds, and assembled by hand before firing. Once fired, artisans applied detailed polychrome enamel pigments and hand-painted gold leaf gilding before a final glaze firing.

Authentic pieces produced by the Carl Thieme factory at Potschappel typically bear the hand-painted or stamped factory mark on the underside, often featuring a crown above an intertwined T and D or a cipher emblem. Additional indicators include precise hand enamelling, fine crisp detailing on facial features, and gilded scrollwork bases.

These decorative objects work effectively as focal points on a mantelpiece, arranged within a glass display cabinet, or positioned atop a sideboard alongside contemporary art or structured greenery to contrast classic craftsmanship with modern minimalism.

Remove surface dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing figures in water or using abrasive liquid cleaners, as moisture and chemicals can compromise delicate applied details or lift surface gilding.
