Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French provincial commodes of the 18th century were crafted outside Paris by regional cabinetmakers, adapting Parisian styles like Louis XV into sturdy native hardwoods like oak and walnut. They typically feature serpentine or bombe fronts, heavy moulding, and decorative cast brass or bronze escutcheons and handles.

These commodes were predominantly constructed using solid regional oak for the outer frame and drawer fronts, with pine or secondary softwoods often used for internal drawer linings and back panels. Hardware was typically hand-cast from brass or bronze and secured with hand-cut iron screws.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joinery in the drawers, and wooden peg construction rather than modern nails. Inspecting the underside and rear reveals uneven hand-planed timber and natural shrinkage cracks around joints consistent with historic age.

A French oak commode serves as a grounding focal point in an entryway, dining room, or bedroom. Interior designers often pair these substantial wooden pieces with modern abstract artwork above the top and contemporary lamps to create a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement or cracking.
