Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to rest above fireplace mantels, serving as architectural focal points. They often feature horizontal tripartite glass configurations and elaborate giltwood or gesso mouldings influenced by Regency and William IV design.

These frames were typically crafted from softwood substrates coated with gessoa mixture of binder and chalkand decorated with gold leaf. The mirrors utilised silvered glass plates set into sectional panels.

Authentic 1830s pieces display hand-carved details, timber backboards held by antique tacks, and natural oxidisation spots on the mirror plate. The gilding often shows age-related wear, revealing red or grey bole beneath the gold leaf.

Position the mirror above a stone mantelpiece or atop a low sideboard to anchor a drawing room or dining area. The gilded finish pairs effectively with neutral plaster walls or deep heritage paint shades.

Clean the glass carefully using a soft cloth without allowing liquids to seep into the frame borders. Dust the carved gesso moulding with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, polished waxes, or chemical cleaners.
