Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sweetmeat glass is a specialised form of Georgian stemware designed to serve dry sweetmeats, candied fruits, or comfits at high-status dessert courses during the eighteenth century. These vessels typically feature a wide, shallow bowl set atop an ornate baluster stem and a sturdy foot.

They were hand-blown using heavy lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided clarity and resonance. The construction involved multi-stage hand assembly, including free-blowing the bowl, joining a knopped or baluster stem, and tooling a domed or folded foot.

Authentic pieces feature a pontil mark or scar on the underside of the base where the pontil rod was detached during making. Additionally, genuine eighteenth-century lead glass displays subtle greyish or purplish tints, slight asymmetric hand-crafting variations, and characteristic wear patterns on the foot ring.

Position the vessel on a dining room sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table as a singular decorative accent. It can function as an elegant catch-all vessel for small items or sit within a display cabinet alongside period glass.

Clean hand-blown antique glass by hand using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive soap, avoiding extreme temperature shifts that cause thermal shock. Dry immediately with a soft microfibre cloth and store away from direct sunlight or humid environments.
