A Victorian overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically dating from the 19th century, these pieces feature architectural proportions, gilded or painted frames, and decorative cresting influenced by Neoclassical and French design styles.

Traditional 19th-century giltwood mirrors were constructed using a softwood core, such as pine or lime wood, coated with gesso and coloured clay bole. Gold leaf was then hand-applied over the bole, with molded composition details added for intricate swags and floral crests.
