Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery that originated in Kagoshima prefecture during the late sixteenth century. During the Meiji period (18681912), production expanded significantly to supply export markets with decorated, gilded ceramics featuring detailed figurative scenes and fine crackle glaze.

Traditional Satsuma ceramics are crafted from earthenware clay finished with a yellowish, micro-crackled glaze. Decoration incorporates raised enamel work known as moriage, hand-painted figurative or floral motifs, and application of liquid gold leaf framing dark cobalt blue or red grounds.

Authentic late nineteenth-century Satsuma pieces typically feature a uniform crackle pattern beneath the enamel surface, heavy hand-gilding, and intricate moriage outlining. The underside often bears a makers mark or artists signature alongside the Shimazu family crest, which resembles a cross within a circle.

Display the vase as a single focal point on a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or inside a display cabinet. Pairing the ceramic with clean-lined contemporary furniture or stone surfaces highlights its intricate polychrome enamelling and detailed brushwork.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove dust. Avoid using water, detergents, or abrasive materials, as moisture can penetrate the fine crackle glaze and damage delicate gilding and raised enamels.
