Large Carved & Gilded Cushion Frame Mirror C.1900

Description

Large carved and gilded cushion frame wall mirror. 35" x 26" mirror plate within a carved and pierced cushion frame of scrolling forms between two bands of gilding. Obvious wear to the gilding on the rope twist inner moulding where it is missing in large portions exposing the wood below. Otherwise good condition, fitted with a new mirror plate. Could be hung either landscape or portrait aspect.

A cushion frame mirror features a convex, rounded profile that projects outward from the wall, creating depth and shadow. Popular from the seventeenth through the early twentieth century, these frames often feature hand-carved detailing, gesso layerings, and water gilding.

Traditional gilt cushion frames were constructed using a softwood or hardwood core, carved detailing, and layered gesso plaster. The surface was finished with red or yellow clay bole followed by delicate gold leaf application.
