Superb George II Mahogany Pad Foot Drop-leaf Dining Table

18th century
Description

-Welcome to Mersham Manor Antiques-

A superb quality George II mahogany dining table.

c1750.

As expected from this very elegant era, they certainly didn`t skimp on wood in the Georgian period, as this very elegant table is extremely heavy, constructed from quality thick solid mahogany. Having two drop-leaves making an elegant round shape when extended. Seating four comfortably.

Standing on elegant, turned tapering legs with pad feet. Which have a gate leg action.

The lovely figured solid mahogany top has a rich glowing patina, with beautiful figuring to the mahogany throughout and good warm rich colour.

This very clever design allows the table to be folded down if necessary. So could be used as a side table if not in use. Even wonderful as a hall centre table.

In excellent condition.

Very robust, solid, sturdy and strong.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George II furniture, produced between 1727 and 1760, is defined by the transition from heavy walnut construction to dense Cuban mahogany. Key characteristics include graceful cabriole or tapered legs, pad feet, restrained carvings, and balanced proportioning designed for flexible living.

High-grade dense mahogany was the predominant timber used for Georgian drop-leaf tables due to its stability, strength, and ability to hold a rich polish. The underlying secondary timber for frames and drawer linings often consisted of pine or oak.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, rule joints along the hinged drop leaves, hand-wrought iron hinges, and irregular wear patterns on the pad feet consistent with centuries of use.

A drop-leaf table serves as a flexible solution for smaller spaces, functioning as a narrow console table against a wall when folded down and expanding into a full dining table when guests arrive.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement or finish degradation.
