Antique George II Mahogany Oval Drop Leaf Dining Table (Georgian)

18th century
Description

An antique George II mahogany oval drop leaf dining table (1727–1760), with a hinged oval top and shaped apron. The table is fitted with a drawer to one end, currently with a plain Georgian brass handle. There is evidence that the drawer originally had a drop handle, which has been replaced at a later date. The drawer is oak lined.

The table stands on cabriole legs terminating in pointed pad feet, with a concave shaping to the rear of each foot.

The drop leaf design allows the table to be compact when closed and extended for dining or occasional use when the leaves are raised, making it a versatile and practical 18th century piece suitable for use as a dining table, occasional table, or centre table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King George II between 1727 and 1760, these tables typically feature dense mahogany construction, cabriole legs terminating in pad or ball-and-claw feet, and hinged side leaves that extend to convert a narrow console into a dining surface.

Mid-18th-century examples predominantly utilized imported Cuban or West Indian mahogany joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon frames, rule-joint edges on the hinged flaps, and hand-forged iron butterfly or strap hinges beneath the tabletop.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks on underside surfaces, natural shrinkage across wider grain sections, original brass ironwork with hand-cut screws, and an unrefined interior frame showing period hand-tool marks.

Positioned against a wall with flaps folded, the piece operates as a hall console or sofa table, while extending both leaves adapts the item into an functional dining table when paired with contemporary dining chairs.

Apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain to preserve the timber moisture, keep the piece away from direct heat radiators to prevent top timber split lines, and immediately wipe up moisture spills.
