Description

A well preserved Chinoiserie longcase clock by this well known provincial Clockmaker.

The early movement features 5 finned pillars, seconds and date. The movement strikes the hours on a single bell.

The case is constructed from pine and oak and is perfectly proportioned and typical of this early 18th century period. The beautifully lacquered case decorated with figures, horses, dogs , houses, and a mixture of flowers and leaves.

A rare survivor from this period of Clockmaking. The large majority of Chinoiserie clock cases were made slightly later and with arched dials.

Note: This clock has only very recently arrived in our Wiltshire showrooms. The case will require some sympathetic restoration and the movement will be serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Chinoiserie horology represents a European decorative movement that imitated East Asian lacquerwork and artistic motifs. Clock cases were treated with build-ups of gesso and varnish, then detailed with gilt scenes of pavilions, figures, and floral landscapes set against dark grounds.

These clocks typically feature a oak or pine carcass covered in layers of spirit varnish and pigments to create a smooth surface. Decorative elements were applied using gold leaf, bronze powders, and raised gesso, complemented by brass clockworks and cast brass dial spandrels.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to the lacquered surfaces, particularly around the door edges and base mouldings. Period dials usually feature engraved brass faces, cast corner spandrels, matte centres, and maker signatures reflective of eighteenth-century clockmaking techniques.

A longcase clock serves as an architectural anchor in a hallway, reception room, or formal dining area. Its dark ground and gold detailing pair effectively with both traditional panelling and modern minimalist backdrops.

Japanned surfaces require stable humidity and temperature to prevent cracking or lifting of the gesso base. Dusting should be executed with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or solvent-based cleaners that dissolve historic spirit varnishes.
