A chinoiserie longcase clock is a tall, floor-standing clock housed in a wooden case decorated with European lacquering techniques, known as japanning, which imitate East Asian lacquerware and decorative motifs.

These clocks typically feature softwoods such as pine or oak for the casing structure, covered in multiple layers of gesso, paint, and varnish. The dials are generally crafted from cast brass and silvered metal, housing iron weights and brass clockwork mechanisms.

Authentic period examples demonstrate age-appropriate fine surface cracking, known as crazing, along the lacquer layers. Additional markers include hand-engraved brass spandrels, cast dials with separate chapter rings, and raised gesso work beneath the gilded chinoiserie motifs.
