A japanned longcase clock is a tall, floor-standing pendulum clock featuring European lacquerwork designed to imitate East Asian lacquer techniques. Popular in Britain during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these clocks featured decorative raised gilding, floral designs, and chinoiserie landscapes painted over dark or gold base coats.

These clocks typically feature a softwood or oak carcase coated with layers of resin varnish and paint to create the japanned surface. Decorative elements often include gesso for relief work, gold leaf or paint for chinoiserie motifs, and cast brass for internal movements, dials, spandrels, and external finials.

Authentic period examples display genuine age-related crazing or fine cracking across the lacquered varnish, known as craquelure. They also feature hand-engraved brass dial plates with cast brass corner spandrels, period clock movements with weight-driven mechanisms, and hand-carved joinery inside the trunk.

Place the clock as a focal architectural accent in a hallway, entryway, or formal dining room. Pairing decorative lacquered woodwork against neutral wall colours allows the intricate patterns and gilded highlights to stand out without overcrowding the space.

Maintain a stable room humidity and keep the clock positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage and lacquer cracking. Dust the casing regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical solvents that could strip the delicate gilded decoration.
